ZENITH DATA SYSTEMS PLANS TO SHIP DESKTOP IV PRODUCTS IN JUNE

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials at Zenith Data Systems, a Bull company, expect volume shipments of computers under the U.S. Air Force's Desktop IV contract to begin by mid-June now that protests of the award have been denied.
"Desktop IV was an innovative procurement, and the Air Force worked with great diligence to assure that it was conducted fairly," said ZDS Federal Systems Vice President Tom Buchsbaum.
"Today's announcement proves that the federal-procurement process works, because it's recognition of the true best value that ZDS is offering in terms of product, pricing, support and quality," he said.
"We're delighted by today's ruling, and we're eager to perform under the contract," Buchsbaum said.
The three-year Desktop IV contract, with a government-estimated value of $724 million, was awarded to ZDS and Government Technology Services Inc. on Feb. 2, 1993. Earlier today, the General Services Administration's Board of Contract Appeals denied all protests of the award.
Buchsbaum said the combination of high-quality products and attractive pricing -- especially compared to other government PC- procurement options -- should make this a "highly successful" contract for ZDS.
"Customers who have been briefed on our Desktop IV offering understand the value that we're making available. Some have told us that they have delayed their PC purchases, so we have strong expectations," Buchsbaum said.
The ZDS PCs to be offered under the Desktop IV contract are all based on the Intel486 microprocessor, and are user-upgradeable with the clock-doubling technology of Intel's OverDrive processor.
The ZDS PCs will arrive network-ready for "thin" Ethernet installations, and with Novell's NetWare "client shell" factory- installed on the hard drive.
Configurations ordered with the latest versions of Microsoft Windows and MS-DOS will have the software pre-loaded on the hard drive. Also, software upgrades and updates will be automatically distributed for free through Feb. 2, 1996.
ZDS is committed to 21-day delivery, and is providing a three-year worldwide onsite warranty.
With volume shipments beginning in mid-June, Buchsaum said, "We believe our federal revenues could increase by $100 million in 1993." The company had federal revenues of approximately $100 million in 1992.
"The award of Desktop IV is a strong endorsement of ZDS' product offering, competitive pricing and track record as a quality, dedicated government supplier,'' Buchsbaum said. ZDS successfully fulfilled both the Desktop I (1983-86) and Desktop II (1986-89) contracts.
Under Desktop IV, the U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy, as well as other Defense Department and civilian agencies, can order from the contract.
