ZENITH, SOUNDESIGN SIGN AUDIO PRODUCTS LICENSING AGREEMENT

 GLENVIEW, Ill., Nov. 24 ~PRNewswire~ -- Zenith Electronics Corp. and Soundesign Corp. have signed a multimillion-dollar licensing agreement under which Soundesign will develop, manufacture and market audio products carrying the Zenith brand name, the companies announced today.
 Soundesign will pay Zenith licensing fees for the use of its name, although specific terms were not disclosed.
 By joining forces with Soundesign, a major supplier of quality audio electronics, Zenith will extend the reach of its famous brand name into a broad range of products that complement Zenith's own product lines, according to Gerald M. McCarthy, president of the Zenith Sales Co. division.
 "This brand extension -- to a full range of stereo systems, portable radios, personal audio products and telephone products -- will expose the Zenith brand to younger consumers, enhancing our marketing efforts for our core product, color TVs and VCRs," McCarthy said.
 Morris I. Franco, Soundesign president, said, "We plan to capitalize on the strength of the great Zenith brand name, long associated with top quality consumer electronics products, in a broad new line of audio~telecommunication products."
 Planned for introduction beginning in the second half of 1993, the new Zenith-brand audio line will be offered to more than 25,000 retail outlets nationwide, Franco said.
 Under the agreements announced today, Zenith is licensing the use of its name to Soundesign for:
 -- Home audio products, including audio rack systems, bookshelf (compact) audio products and component audio products;
 -- Portable audio products, including radios, personal cassette players, compact disc (CD) players and cassette player~recorders;
 -- Consumer telephone equipment, including corded hand-set phones, feature phones, cordless phones, telephone answering machines, telephone-tape combinations and clock-radio-telephones; and
 -- Consumer audio products for automobiles.
 The pact with Zenith builds on Soundesign's experience in brand marketing. Franco said, "Over the past two years, our line of 'Playskool Electronics by KIDesigns' has become a dominant force in children's electronics."
 Soundesign, a division of SDI Technologies Inc., is a highly focused electronics firm that, for more than 35 years, has concentrated exclusively on audio products design, manufacturing and distribution. With corporate headquarters in Jersey City, N.J., privately-held SDI has design and engineering offices in the Far East, and manufacturing operations in the Far East and in North America.
 Zenith Electronics Corp., based in Glenview, Ill., is the only independent U.S.-owned color television and picture tube manufacturer, and has been a leader in consumer electronics since 1918. The company has a long history of pioneering developments in audio technologies, including the first portable radios in the 1920s, the first push-button radios in the 1930s, early transistor radios in the 1940s and pioneering work in stereo FM in the 1950s. Zenith invented the stereo FM transmission system adopted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1961 and developed the MTS stereo TV system adopted by the FCC in 1984.
