ZEMEX CORPORATION SUBSIDIARY SELLS VIRGINIA FACILITY

 ASHEVILLE, N.C., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Zemex Corporation (NYSE: ZMX) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, The Feldspar Corporation, has entered into an agreement to sell its Montpelier, Va., Aplite facility to U.S. Silica Corporation. This sale will result in an extraordinary one-time profit of slightly less that $4 million. The funds received from this sale will be applied to construction of Zemex's newly announced $13.5 million expansion of its Spruce Pine feldspar facility.
 Zemex indicated that this sale is consistent with its program to eliminate non-core assets and The Feldspar Corporation's dedication to serve the ceramic, plastic and coatings markets worldwide.
 Zemex Corporation is a diversified industrial minerals and materials company. Its principal businesses are iron, steel and copper powders to serve the ferrous and non-ferrous powder metal markets and industrial minerals which supply the ceramic, plastic and coatings markets.
