ZEBRA ANNOUNCES REVOLUTIONARY NEW PRINTER TECHNOLOGY

VERNON HILLS, Ill., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Zebra Technologies (NASDAQ-NMS: ZBRA) announced today a revolutionary new printer technology that dramatically reduces the cost of thermal transfer printing. This proprietary technology, called the STRETCH Extended Ribbon System, is being announced at the industry's largest trade show being held in Philadelphia Oct. 19-21.
Charles R. Whitchurch, Zebra's chief financial officer, noted: "This technology extends thermal transfer ribbon life by significant amounts, substantially reducing the cost of a printed label. Depending on the application, the use of this technology can reduce ribbon use by 400 percent or more. This reduction makes high quality thermal transfer labels cost competitive with laser, direct thermal, and even dot matrix alternatives.
"We anticipate that this product will have a material impact on 1994 sales and profits," Whitchurch continued. "The proprietary nature of this technology dramatically improves our retention rates on ribbons and supplies. We expect to sell this product into high volume applications that otherwise might consider alternative printing technologies."
Zebra, which is scheduled to announce its third quarter financial results tomorrow morning, manufactures a broad line of thermal transfer demand label printers and associated supplies which are marketed in 47 countries throughout the world. The company's stock is traded Over the Counter under the NASDAQ symbol ZBRA.
