ZDS INTRODUCES SIMPLE, COST-EFFECTIVE NETWORKING SOLUTION
 THROUGH MICROSOFT WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS
NEW YORK, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The combination of personal computers from Zenith Data Systems (a Bull company) and newly introduced software from Microsoft Corp. creates an instant and affordable networking solution, ZDS announced today.
At the introduction here today, ZDS said this week it would begin factory-installing Microsoft Windows for Workgroups operating system version 3.1 on the hard drives of its Z-STATION desktop and Z-NOTE notebook PCs.
"These PCs have Ethernet-compatible hardware built in. By adding Windows for Workgroups, we now have one of the best networking solutions in the PC industry," said Alan J. Soucy, ZDS vice president of product strategy and advanced planning. "Sharing resources -- from files to peripherals -- has never been simpler or more cost-effective."
"ZDS was the first hardware manufacturer to approach us about plug and play networking," said Brad Silverberg, vice president of Microsoft's Personal Systems Division. "ZDS convinced us that out-of- the-box networking would soon become a reality, which in turn helped inspire our development efforts for Windows for Workgroups," Silverberg said.
Soucy said, "With this new software, anyone will be able to set up a local area network of two or more Z-STATIONs and Z-NOTEs in minutes."
"We expect to see notebooks wired together at meetings for increased productivity, notebooks and desktops sharing a CD-ROM player -- even Z- NOTEs being used as file-servers," he said.
"And neither expensive network adapter cards nor the time-consuming installation of network operating systems is required. All that's needed is an optional, inexpensive network media adapter for each PC," Soucy said.
ZDS plans to begin factory-installing Windows for Workgroups on the hard drives of Z-STATION and Z-NOTE PCs this week. The software will be pre-configured and optimized for each system.
Zenith Data Systems introduced the Z-NOTE line in April 1992 and the Z-STATION line in June. The four Z-NOTE models are the industry's first PC-compatible notebooks with built-in networking.
All Z-NOTE and Z-STATION models also are shipped with MS-DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1, plus the three leading network "client shells" (Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager and Banyan VINES) factory-installed on the hard drive.
The Z-NOTE and Z-STATION models are part of the company's advanced professional products line, which is based on a long-term product strategy that is built around four guiding principles: Investment Protection, Integrated Connectivity, Ease of Use, and Design & Ergonomics.
Soucy said ZDS' use of Windows for Workgroups is fully consistent with this strategy, especially the concepts of Integrated Connectivity and Ease of Use.
Silverberg said, "ZDS' approach to networking -- building it right into its PCs -- makes perfect sense. In fact, ZDS has been a key test site for Windows for Workgroups, and the company's products have been important demonstration platforms for Microsoft."
Zenith Data Systems products are available directly from ZDS through its field sales force or through its new Z-DIRECT catalog. The company also has a network of more than 200 North American authorized resellers. The company has distribution arrangements with five major distributors (DataGo, Ingram Micro, Merisel, Microage and ROBEC), who in turn supply their dealers with ZDS products. A separate line of ZDS consumer-PC products is available through mass merchandisers and specialty retailers.
Zenith Data Systems, a Bull company, is a leading supplier of notebook and desktop PCs, servers, monitors and related peripherals. With headquarters in Buffalo Grove, Ill., the company has engineering facilities in St. Joseph, Mich., Santa Clara, Calif., and Billerica, Mass.; manufacturing facilities in St. Joseph, Mich., and Villeneuve d'Ascq, France; and sales locations in more than 30 countries.
