ZDS INTRODUCES EIGHT POWERFUL Z-STATIONS, THE FIRST DESKTOPS
FACTORY-LOADED WITH MICROSOFT WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS
NEW YORK, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Zenith Data Systems, a Bull company, today announced eight new models of its Z-STATION desktop computer, the first to be pre-loaded with Microsoft Windows for Workgroups.
The new Z-STATION computers feature Intel's new 66 megahertz 486DX/2 microprocessor. ZDS begins this week factory-installing Windows for Workgroups on the hard drives of all network ready Z-STATION and Z-NOTE PCs. (See accompanying news release.)
"These new Z-STATION desktop PCs are for people who need high levels of power in numerically intensive computing, such as advanced desktop publishing, engineering or financial modeling," said Mitchell Perlitch, ZDS director of desktop computers.
Like all Z-STATION desktop personal computers, the models featuring the i486DX/2 66MHz processor offer built-in hardware and software for local area networking (LAN) capability and a unique modular architecture for the simple, cost-effective upgrading of all key components.
The Z-STATION models introduced today are available in four platforms:
-- Z-STATION 466Xh, with a four-slot chassis with an ISA bus, and 4MB of RAM. Hard-drive configurations are:
 -- Model 200
 -- Model 400
-- Z-STATION 466Xn, with a two-slot chassis with an ISA bus, and 4MB of RAM. Hard drive configurations are:
 -- Model 200
 -- Model 400
-- Z-STATION 466XEh, with a four-slot chassis with an EISA bus, SCSI module and 8MB of RAM.
 Hard-drive configurations are:
 -- Model 200
 -- Model 400
-- Z-STATION 466XEn, with a two-slot chassis with an EISA bus, with 8MB of RAM.
 Hard drive configurations are:
 -- Model 200
 -- Model 400
The Z-STATION is based on the four guiding "principles" of the company's long-term product strategy: Investment Protection, Integrated Connectivity, Ease of Use, and Design & Ergonomics.
-- Investment Protection: All major components of the Z-STATION -- microprocessor, memory, storage, video and BIOS -- are designed to be easily upgradeable.
-- Integrated Connectivity: All Z-STATION PCs include an Ethernet- compatible NE2000-compatible Novell-certified LAN module, plus the three leading network "client shells" (Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager and Banyan VINES) factory-installed on the hard drive.
-- Ease of Use: The Z-STATION PCs come with MS-DOS 5.0, Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups and the network client shells pre-installed and optimized for each configuration. Most upgrades can be performed in seconds; many snap in without tools after the cover is removed with the turn of a single thumbscrew; and connections and upgrades are guided by clear icons.
-- Design & Ergonomics: All Z-STATION models share a contemporary, elegant industrial design. Even the interior of the system has been streamlined for improved serviceability.
Other features of the Z-STATION series include:
-- A ZDS-exclusive Windows Accelerator Module option that increases video performance under Microsoft Windows 3.1 by three to five times.
-- An optional SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface) module, for the addition of SCSI peripherals such as a CD-ROM player or tape-backup device.
-- System memory that can be upgraded from 4MB to 64MB in ISA models, and from 8MB to 128MB in EISA models.
-- A Microsoft Mouse bundled with every system.
-- Super VGA (1024x768) video on the system board.
The system comes with a 1.44MB 3.5-inch floppy disk drive and will be upgradeable to a 2.88MB drive when available. The Z-STATION PCs also come with a high-voltage power supply to support future upgrades of the processor, hard drive and other components.
The Z-STATION desktop personal computers with built-in networking are priced from $2,659 for a Z-STATION 466Xn Model 200 with a 200MB hard drive, 4MB of RAM and the 66MHz i486DX/2 processor, and are expected to be available from ZDS in December.
Z-STATION desktop personal computers are available directly from ZDS through its field sales force or through its new Z-DIRECT catalog. The company also has a network of more than 200 North American authorized resellers. Resellers and distributors determine their own pricing.
ZDS has distribution arrangements with five major distributors (DataGo, Ingram Micro, Merisel, Microage and ROBEC), who in turn supply their dealers with ZDS products.
