ZDS INTRODUCES BROAD NEW 1992 PROFESSIONAL PC LINE
PARIS, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Zenith Data Systems, Bull's worldwide

personal computer (PC) organization, today introduced a completely new 1992 line of advanced notebook and desktop PCs, servers and monitors, all based on a new product strategy designed to clearly differentiate the company in the marketplace.
"This is the biggest product launch in the 13-year history of Zenith Data Systems, both in terms of size and significance," said Enrico Pesatori, ZDS president and chief executive officer.
"We have taken many major steps over the past 18 months to respond to our customers' needs for innovative, aggressively priced products, and to adapt to the upheaval in the PC industry. Today's announcements represent the culmination of our efforts," he said.
"We have a broad new line that effectively addresses the two main PC market segments. We have a visionary product strategy that anticipates our customers' future requirements. And we have a new corporate 'look' that includes everything from our products to our logo," Pesatori said. "ZDS is a whole new company."
Bull Chairman Francis Lorentz said, "The PC market has undergone a profound transformation since Bull acquired ZDS in December 1989, but so has ZDS. The company took many positive steps last year, and today's announcements will assure ZDS' success in a crowded marketplace."
At a press conference held here today, ZDS announced:
-- The five fundamental "platforms" in its Advanced Professional Products line -- Z-STATION desktop PCs, Z-SERVER servers, Z-NOTE and Z- SPORT notebook computers, and Z-VISION monitors -- and the 40 models based on those platforms.
-- The four guiding "principles" -- Investment Protection, Integrated Connectivity, Ease of Use, and Design & Ergonomics -- that Pesatori said "will clearly distinguish ZDS' Advanced Professional PCs in the marketplace"; and
-- A two-tiered product strategy, with an Advanced Professional Products line for value-oriented users seeking superior functionality and features, and an array of products -- from entry-level notebook PCs to fast Intel486SX-based desktop PCs -- for the home or office user seeking an attractive balance of price and performance.
ZDS' new 1992 line of Advanced Professional Products includes:
-- The Z-STATION series, 19 high-performance desktop PC models that combine:
-- Built-in local area network (LAN) hardware and software. The software is pre-configured for optimal use on each system.
-- Simple, cost-effective upgradeability of all key components, such as processor, storage and video. For example, the Intel386SX processor can be upgraded to an Intel486DX/2 with the replacement of a single chip.
-- A ZDS-exclusive Windows Accelerator Module option that increases video performance under Microsoft Windows 3.1 by three to five times.
Available in a two- or four-slot chassis, the desktop PCs are offered with a wide range of processors, from a 25-megahertz Intel386SX to a 50MHz Intel486DX2. Customers can select models incorporating either an ISA or 32-bit EISA bus.
-- The Z-SERVER series, a family of eight high-performance, highly scalable "towers" that can be used as network servers or multi-user systems. They offer:
-- A range of processors, from the 25-MHz Intel486SX to the 50MHz Intel486DX, all upgradeable -- even to Intel's next generation of microprocessors -- as workgroup requirements expand.
-- An EISA bus with eight expansion slots, modular architecture for the easy addition of SCSI drives, and optional RAID 5 software for data integrity.
-- The ability to expand random access memory to 192 megabytes with 256K cache.
-- As with other ZDS products, certification programs for the leading network operating systems.
These systems, previewed in April in Europe, are now available worldwide.
-- The Z-NOTE series, four models (introduced in North America in April and introduced for the European market today) that are the first PC-compatible notebook computers with built-in local area networking (LAN) capability. The four Z-NOTE models earned Byte Magazine's "Best of Show" award at the COMDEX computer trade convention in Chicago in April.
-- The Z-SPORT series, four lightweight, powerful notebook PCs for the price-conscious user. The Z-SPORT line includes two models based on the Intel386SX chip, as well as two Intel486SX-based models. Offered as an option is a docking unit for increased flexibility.
-- The Z-VISION series, a line of five monitors that includes the company's first 17-inch (16-inch viewable) high-resolution multisync monitor with a perfectly flat faceplate that virtually eliminates glare and ambient reflections.
 New Product Strategy.
Zenith Data Systems' new product strategy addresses two divergent segments of the market. Through this strategy, ZDS will offer two distinct product lines:
-- An Advanced Professional Products line, represented by the 40 models introduced today, that are based on four guiding principles. "In a world of continuous technological change, the principles of Investment Protection, Integrated Connectivity, Ease of Use, and Design & Ergonomics will serve as constants," Pesatori said.
"We expect these principles to become the new benchmarks that business professionals everywhere will use to evaluate systems. We're certain that ZDS PCs built around these principles will offer exceptional performance and value," he said.
-- An array of notebook and desktop PCs -- from entry-level systems to powerful, full-function computers -- for the home or office user seeking an attractive balance of price and performance.
"Users who are seeking systems that offer an attractive price performance ratio should have access to price-competitive, high- performance, notebook or desktop PCs from a reliable long-term supplier like ZDS," Pesatori said.
Pesatori explained the four differentiating "principles" that serve as the foundation of ZDS' Advanced Professional Products line:
 INVESTMENT PROTECTION:
"The lifecycle of a personal computer can be extended cost- effectively by anticipating and planning for future technology," he said. "For example, the black-on-white LCDs in the Z-NOTE series can be upgraded to active-matrix color LCDs when the user is ready."
 INTEGRATED CONNECTIVITY:
"Increasingly, personal computers are being used to access information and share data resources. Ideally, this should be able to occur regardless of the user's location," he said. "That's why we're building networking hardware and software into virtually all of our desktop and notebook PCs."
 EASE OF USE:
"A personal computer should be so simple to use that it becomes a transparent tool, a tool that saves time and increases productivity," Pesatori said. "Whether it's pre-loaded software or upgrades that can be performed without tools, our goal is to simplify -- and therefore improve -- the computing experience."
 DESIGN & ERGONOMICS:
"We believe that our personal computers should provide an experience that is as emotionally satisfying as it is intellectually stimulating," Pesatori said. "We've worked with one of the world's leading industrial design firms to create a family of products with a common look of contemporary elegance. You'll be proud to own them."
Pesatori said, "This is a long-term strategy, so these principles will be represented in our professional products for years to come -- even though the technologies used to implement these principles will evolve."
To support the new strategy, ZDS increased its R&D budget by 25 percent in 1991 and expects to increase it another 20 percent in 1992.
"Our personal computers will always offer high performance, excellent value and superior quality," Pesatori said. "But customers should expect more, and ZDS will use these four principles to provide it."
 A NEW COMPANY.
Over the past 18 months, we have concentrated on developing a long- term strategy that recognizes the changing market and responds to our customers' requirements. At the same time, we have dramatically improved our time to market, resized the company to increase our competitiveness, and challenged every one of our 3,000 employees to further improve the quality of our products and services," Pesatori said.
"As a result, despite our 13-year history and more than a billion dollars in annual revenues, we're essentially a start-up. We have the resources and expertise of an industry leader, but the entrepreneurial spirit and responsiveness of a young company," Pesatori said.
"We are taking this opportunity to develop a whole new look that reflects that we're a whole new company," he said. "Our new products share a re-designed look of contemporary elegance, which we've taken and applied everywhere, even to our logo."
