ZDS DEMONSTRATES NEW ENERGY-EFFICIENT MONITOR WITH FOURTH-GENERATION SL-BASED NOTEBOOK

WASHINGTON, June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Zenith Data Systems, a Bull company, today demonstrated a newly developed energy-efficient 15-inch (tube) Super VGA multisync color monitor combined with a high- performance Z-NOTE notebook computer with advanced power management features.
The demonstration took place at a White House news conference hosted by Vice President Albert Gore to review the progress made by the computer industry toward the implementation of the Environmental Protection Agency's "Energy Star" program.
The "Energy Star" program is a challenge issued by the EPA a year ago to produce personal computers and peripherals that are more energy- efficient.
"ZDS and the entire computer industry have responded in world-record time to this voluntary partnership with the EPA to improve the environment, save customers money and enhance computing's price performance," said David O'Connor, executive vice president of the ZDS Worldwide Product Group.
At the White House news conference, the new ZCM-1540 monitor was driven by an award-winning Z-NOTE 425Lnc notebook computer using a 3.3 volt 25MHz Intel486 SL microprocessor.
The new ZDS monitor is a 15-inch (tube) Super VGA multisync, high- resolution (1024 x 768), flicker-free display. The ZCM-1540's large, variable viewing area is intended for graphical applications, desktop publishing, layout work or any environment where users must view the display for extended periods of time.
The ZCM-1540 automatically switches to lower levels of power consumption when not in use. Any application that has the capability to blank the screen such as Microsoft Windows 3.1 or AfterDark screen saver can automatically switch a monitor into a stand-by mode. This can lower the energy consumption for a monitor such as the ZCM-1540 by 30 percent, or to less than 30 watts.
The ZCM-1540 will, after a prolonged period of inactivity, switch automatically into a snooze mode, that will consume less than eight watts. After one hour of inactivity, the monitor will go into a rest state consuming less than four watts. A single touch of the keyboard will restore the ZCM-1540 to full activity.
The Z-NOTE 425Lnc notebook computer is the fourth generation of ZDS notebooks using Intel's SL microprocessors. The i486 SL is Intel's newest high-performance microprocessor designed specifically for portable notebook computers. It offers all the power conservation features developed for the original SL microprocessor, as well as true desktop performance users expect from an i486 DX-based system.
In addition to the low voltage and power-saving microprocessor, Z-NOTEs feature power conservation modes that include standby and rest/resume. All communications ports are auto-sensing and are off until in use. The IDE hard drives in all Z-NOTEs are "rest aware," powering down when not needed.
Much of the power-saving technology pioneered by ZDS for its portable computers is now being adopted by many computer makers for desktop computers.
