ZDS ANNOUNCES THREE POWERFUL 486-BASED Z-STAR NOTEBOOK PCs, RICH IN FEATURES, AFFORDABLE IN PRICE

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Zenith Data Systems, a Bull company, today introduced three new 486-based notebook personal computers that are packed with both features and value.
The three models in the new Z-STAR 433VL series utilize a powerful 33 MHz 486SLC microprocessor, generous hard disk storage, an innovative integrated pointing device, PCMCIA support, and new color display technology.
"The Z-STAR brings high-performance notebook computing well within the reach of all users," said David O'Connor, executive vice president of the ZDS Worldwide Product Group.
The three models in the Z-STAR 433VL series are:
 -- Z-STAR 433VL Model 80, with a 33 MHz 486SLC microprocessor, 9.5 inch diagonal monochrome display, 2MB of RAM, an 80MB hard drive, MS-DOS 6.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1 pre-installed. Priced at $1,399 and shipping next week.
 -- Z-STAR 433VL Model 170W, with a 33 MHz 486SLC microprocessor, 9.5 inch diagonal monochrome display, 4MB of RAM, a 170MB hard drive with MS-DOS 6.0, Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Microsoft Works for Windows 2.0 pre-installed. Priced at $1,699 and shipping immediately.
-- Z-STAR 433VLp Model 200W, with a 33 MHz 486SLC microprocessor, 9.5 inch diagonal DUALBRITE VGA color display, 4MB of RAM, a 200MB hard drive with MS-DOS 6.0, Microsoft Windows 3.1 and Microsoft Works for Windows 2.0 pre-installed. Priced at $2,399 and shipping next week.
The Z-STAR 433VL systems feature a 33 MHz Cyrix 486SLC microprocessor with internal cache memory for highly cost-effective 486-class computing power.
The 486SLC utilizes a 32-bit internal/16-bit external bus design to deliver 486SX levels of performance. The 486SLC has significant power management capabilities, including the ability to bookmark applications and drop into a fully-static state when in rest mode. A user installable numeric coprocessor is available for the Z-STAR 433VL and the system can accommodate up to 12MB of total system RAM.
The Z-STAR 433VL provides users with three hours of continuous computing power on monochrome systems or up to two hours on color models(A). The Z-STAR 433VL uses a 1.7AHr removable NiCad battery back. An optional NiMH battery pack is also offered.
The Z-STAR 433VL also features the J-Mouse, an integrated and easy to use pointing device located on the notebook PC's standard keyboard.
According to O'Connor, research indicates that isometric devices such as the J-Mouse outperform traditional mouse-and-keyboard devices.
"In fact, users considered the J-Mouse to be faster and more accurate than a mouse or other pointing devices," he said.
When tapped in a normal typing motion, the "J" key generates the letter "J" as it would with any other keyboard. However, by applying light and continued pressure to the dished J-Mouse and pushing the key in the desired direction of the cursor movement, the key functions as a built-in mouse.
The F-key, space bar, D-key, S-key and G-key, combined with the J-Mouse, provide complete three-button mouse functionality.
O'Connor said that the J-Mouse "is truly integrated and accommodates the needs of both right- and left-handed users."
The Z-STAR 433VL features one PCMCIA Type II expansion slot, which permits the use of a wide range of credit-card size devices for options such as modems and local area network (LAN) adapters. PCMCIA card and socket services are also preloaded on the Z-STAR 433VL.
The Z-STAR 433VL is available with either a 9.5 inch monochrome or a new DUALBRITE VGA color display. The DUALBRITE technology offers a contrast ratio of 18 to 1 versus the traditional 12 to 1 in previous passive-matrix color systems.
"This provides users with high quality color at truly affordable prices," O'Connor said.
The Z-STAR 433VL is part of ZDS' Z series, which is based on the guiding principles of the company's long-term product strategy: Investment Protection, Integrated Connectivity, Ease of Use, and Design & Ergonomics.
"Three of these principles can be found in the Z-STAR," O'Connor said.
 Integrated Connectivity
The Z-STAR 433VL features one PCMCIA Type II expansion slot, which permits the use of a wide range of credit-card size peripherals, including data/fax modems and local area network (LAN) adapters.
 Ease of Use
Power Management: All Z-STAR 433VL notebook systems comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star standards because of their power-saving capabilities.
For up to three hours of continuous computing power on monochrome systems or up to two hours on the color model(A), the Z-STAR 433VL has a standard 1.7AHr removable NiCad battery pack. The notebook system automatically enters Standby mode when the lid is closed.
J-Mouse: The Z-STAR 433VL features the innovative J-Mouse, which allows users to position and leave their fingers naturally placed on the keyboard home row while using an isometric joystick contained in the "J" key to guide cursor movement.
Keyboard: The Z-STAR 433VL features an 85-key, full travel keyboard which emulates the tactile response and functionality of a 101-key desktop keyboard.
 Design & Ergonomics
The Z-STAR 433VL's color model features the new DUALBRITE color display, which utilizes dual-scan DSTN technology to dramatically increase contrast ratios while producing a bright and clear range of colors.
The Z-STAR 433VL is available directly from ZDS through its field sales force or through its Z-DIRECT catalog. The company also has a network of more than 200 North American authorized resellers. The company has distribution arrangements with seven major distributors (DataGo, Gates/FA, Ingram Micro, Merisel, Microage, ROBEC and Tech Data).
Resellers and distributors determine their own prices, which may be higher or lower than ZDS' direct price.
