ZDS ANNOUNCES NEW MODELS AND ENHANCEMENTS TO THE Z-400+ DESKTOP SERIES

NEW YORK, June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Zenith Data Systems, a Bull company, announced today two new models of the Z-400+ desktop personal computer that incorporate major enhancements for its most popular and cost-effective desktop PC.
"With these enhancements, the Z-400+ series takes a major step forward at providing users with high performance systems at a high value point," said David O'Connor, executive vice president of the ZDS Product Group, at the PC Expo trade show here.
The Z-450X+ and the Z-466X+ use the Intel486 DX2 processor with clock-doubling technology. The new machines include a 256K write-back cache, local bus video, 4MB of RAM expandable to 64MB and five open expansion slots.
ZDS also announced a 256K write-back cache module for all Z-400+ PCs with DX or DX2 processors. Z-400+ systems that are SX-based can be upgraded to either DX or DX2 with cache. The ZDS price of the cache module is $239.
"Write-back cache can increase performance by as much as 46 percent on a 66MHz DX2 system (A). That means users with complex applications can speed up their performance for a very small investment," O'Connor said.
A new standard feature on all Z-400+ systems is 1MB of video RAM, an increase from 512K. "This will greatly increase video resolution and color display capabilities," said O'Connor.
The Z-400+ features local-bus Super VGA circuitry that has VESA- compliant refresh rates, at supported modes, which means "flicker free" performance. It also supports a 24-bit color capability for picture- quality resolution and "true color" capability that supports 64,000 colors at SVGA mode and 16.8 million colors at VGA mode.
ZDS also announced immediate availability of the 510MB hard drive and a 1.2MB/1.44MB combination floppy drive for the Z-400+ series. The large capacity hard drive allows for maximum storage capacity while maintaining quick access and reliability.
The Z-400+ -- an assemble-to-order product -- permits custom configurations. Users can select the processor, memory, mass storage devices, floppy drives and peripherals to meet nearly any computing requirement.
All Z-400+ systems feature an open drive bay that allows the addition of a second floppy drive, tape back-up system, CD-ROM or second hard drive with support for master/slave operations. The Z-400+ also has five ISA slots that accept a wide range of peripheral options.
The Z-400+ features 4MB of RAM as standard, expandable to 64MB on the system board. Hard drives are available in 170, 245, 340 and now 510MB sizes. The latest version of MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows 3.1 come pre-loaded and pre-installed. A two-button mouse and a one-year on-site limited warranty are included with all Z-400+ computers.
ZDS bundles the Z-400+ PC with a choice of six monochrome and color monitors. The 170MB version of the Z-400+ with a 50MHz i486 DX2 microprocessor starts at $2,099 with a 14-inch (13-inch viewable) monochrome monitor.
