Your Problems: Scared of burn return.

Byline: Miriam Stoppard

Dear Miriam

I'M 27 and for the last 18 months I've suffered quite frequently with pain that my doctors are calling cystitis.

I've taken two courses of tablets and had creams and then tests to make sure it had gone and everything was fine.

I'm OK now but worried about the future. How can I prevent further attacks?

BURNING pain on passing urine, repeated trips to the lavatory, often to pass only a few drops. and pain in the abdomen and back are the distressing symptoms of cystitis.

Mechanical trauma from strenuous sex is also a common cause of cystitis. If sexual intercourse brings on an attack, this is also known as urethral syndrome or honeymoon cystitis.

The advent of nylon tights and very tight clothes like jeans has given rise to cystitis because of pressure on, and even bruising of, the urethra.

Drink sugar-free cranberry juice twice a day or take cranberry capsules. Cranberries acidify the urine and prevent growth of bacteria in your bladder that cause inflammation.

You may be able to prevent further attacks by not delaying the urge to urinate. After passing water or bowel movements, always wipe from front to back, not the other way round.

Use a lubricant like KY Jelly available at chemists and ensure sufficient lubrication before intercourse. Empty the bladder soon after intercourse and avoid douches, vaginal deodorants and powders.

Avoid drinks that irritate the bladder, such as alcohol and caffeine.

I'm sending you my Cystitis leaflet which will give you more information..
