GAP Wines on Belfast's Antrim Road has the single estate 100 per cent sangiovese Sovestro Chianti Colli Senesi, right, which ticks all the boxes at just pounds 6.99.

DIRECTWine Shipments has a big selection of chiantis and Masi is a huge producer in Italy. Their Renzo Fattoria di Basciano Chianti Rufina 2005 at pounds 8.49 has a bit of Cabernet but still plenty of black cherries and spice.

FOR pure sangiovese try La Pieve Fortebraccio Chianti at pounds 10.49 for what Decanter called a "densely textured with soft cherry fruit" beauty.

INDEPENDENTS should have the single vineyard Mellini Chianti Classico Granaio at a shade under a tenner - 100 per cent sangiovese and plenty of those dark cherries.

M&S has Castello di Poppiano's Chianti Colli Fiorentini at pounds 9.99.
