Your LIFE: WE LOVE TELLY! - DOCUMENTARY THE QUEEN MOTHER IN LOVE C4, 9pm.
IT'S HARD to equate the rather plain, bushy-browed young Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon with the tales of a charming, social butterfly who had scores of eligible young men falling at her feet. In one year alone she had five proposals of marriage and turned them all down, because her eye was on the main prize: Edward, Prince of Wales.
A parade of posh biographers are wheeled out here - alongside the usual clumsy reconstructions - to tell the story of how she eventually agreed to marry Edward's younger-brother, Bertie only when the penny finally dropped that she wasn't going to land the biggest fish of all.
Dull, not very bright, socially inept, with a stutter, a bad temper and a drink problem, poor old Bertie was definitely a booby prize.
No wonder, then, that the future Queen Mum loathed Wallis Simpson at first sight.
