SWAP processed foods (nuggets, ready-meals, instant noodles, etc) for fresh fish and lean meat, fruit and vegetables, rice and pasta.

WHEN you do buy packaged foods read the labels - additives must be listed in the ingredients.

DITCH fizzy drinks and squash for carbonated mineral water or fruit juice which are additive-free.

SODIUM benzoate is used in lots of soft drinks. The FSA says it is less likely to be implicated in bad behaviour, but it's worth avoiding if your child reacts to other additives.

YOU don't have to ban all sweets. Brands which contain no artificial colours include Haribo Tangfastics and Star Mix, and M&S's Percy Pigs and Fizzy Fish. M&S also sells birthday cakes that are free from artificial flavours and colours.
