Youngsters look to build their careers.

A house builder hosted a skills taster day in a bid to encourage more young people to take up apprenticeships and join the construction industry.

Sixteen young people from across Shropshire were invited to attend the event at Shingler Home's site in Hanwood.

Youngsters were given demonstrations of bricklaying, carpentry and paving and also learnt the importance of health and safety.

They then had the chance to try the skills themselves under the supervision of Shingler's tradesmen.

Managing director, Jeremy Shingler, said: "We were delighted with the amount of interest we received to come and have an up-close look at our industry and we are really hopeful that this will encourage some of them to join us here at Shingler Group.

"We noted some instant talent from some of the young people who are sure to have a good career in construction ahead of them.

"At Shingler Group we believe apprenticeship opportunities are incredibly important for young people and for the future of our industry.

"They are the best way to properly learn the skills of the trade and gain your qualifications."

The firm employs more than 130 people across their construction sites and has its headquarters in Myddle, near Shrewsbury.

From this taster day Shingler Group is hoping to recruit eight carpentry, bricklaying and multi-skilled apprentices and will also be doing another event later in the summer.
