Young views on race.

As demonstrated by recent violent outbreaks throughout the country, deteriorated race relations remain the pivotal moral challenge facing the nation today. A nationwide study of more than 1,100 American youth age 15 to 24 was recently conducted by People For the American Way, a 300,000-member nonpartisan constitutional liberties organization. Fifty percent of those studied described existing race relations as "generally bad." Distinct racial tension was noted between blacks and whites, particularly on issues affecting economic self-interest. For example, 10% of white youth view whites as victims of discrimination, while 46% of blacks see themselves as victims. Unsurprisingly, 65% of whites oppose affirmative-action initiatives toward minorities, while 60% of blacks favor such efforts.

A MATTER OF OPINION

African-American and white group members were asked their opinion of discrimination practices Example: 46% of blacks believe they are discriminated against; while 31%feel that whites also experience unfair treatment.

FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABES

According to the study, many whites adopt and embrace negative and sweeping stereotypes of African-Americans at an early age * "...blacks don't have the same enthusiam or the same work ethics as whites." * "They are lazy and it would be better if they weren't doing drugs." * "I think the black race counts on the system to support them." * "They stay on welfare too long." * "Blacks don't appreciate what we give them."
