Young trio celebrate a year of amazing success; MARTIAL ARTS.
THREE young Teesside martial artists are celebrating an excellent year in which they earned national and international titles.
Brazilian jiu jitsu stars Milly Horkan, 15, Max Ashton, 13 and 11-year-old Alex Williams have all tasted success against some of the world's best young fighters over the last year.
Nunthorpe Academy student Milly, who previously excelled in judo, has enjoyed huge success in her first year in the sport, becoming a British and European Champion and also winning gold in an adult Inter Club 6 competition.
Max, who is trained by his dad, Martin, also picked up UK and European titles, while the youngest of the trio, Alex, has become a world, European and national champion and is ranked No 1 according to the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation. All three of the young stars are able to chase their dreams thanks to free programmes at their nonprofit Thornaby gym.
Run by Ralph Presgrave and Martin Ashton, the gym offers youngsters aged six to 12 training under a special scheme called Urban Gorillas, while 13-19-yearolds are helped to realise their ambitions under Submit 2 Success.
Kevin Horkan, Milly's dad and coach at the gym, said: "The three of them are a pleasure to work with, they give up all their spare time and weekends to train religiously.
"They all have big futures in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA."
