Connacht FBD League Mayo 0-12 GMIT 1-6 MAYO boss James Horan's aim for the FBD League is to find a few players and the Green and Red youngsters had enough craft to defeat NUIG at McHale Park.

Darren Coen's five point contribution was the main reason why Mayo prevailed at chilly Castlebar.

The heavy underfoot conditions ensured it was difficult and it took Mayo a while to settle against the busy Students'.

Coen ended a 10 minute search for a score when rifling a Mayo free, but NUIG responded quickly as Criostoir Davey and Kevin Gibbons nailed points.

Mayo, though, enjoyed a decent burst reeling off four on the spin as Brendan Harrison, Tom King, Keith Rogers, and Mikey Sweeney all found the range.

As the interval approached NUIG struck two points from Johnny Kelly and Shane Moran to trim the deficit to the minimum.

Then Mayo were denied a goal as Diarmuid O'Connor forced a splendid reflex save from Donal O'Sullivan.

From the resultant 45 Mayo goalkeeper Robbie Hennelly split the uprights as they went in 0-6 to 0-4 ahead at the break.

Despite Mayo's supremacy NUIG remained earnest, though, and a sweet score from Davey had them only 0-8 to 0-5 behind.

But a brace of classy Coen points had Mayo four clear when NUIG struck for a goal with five minutes remaining.

The Mayo defence failed to deal with an Ian Galvin delivery and Sean Moran pounced to slam a goal that had NUIG trailing 0-10 to 1-6. Mayo stayed calm as Coen and substitute Michael Conroy sealed the win with points in the closing seconds. SCORERS - MAYO: D Coen 0-5 (3fs), R Hennelly 0-2 (2 '45s), M Sweeney 0-1, M Conroy 0-1, T King 0-1, B Harrison 0-1, K Rogers 0-1.
