Young anglers quick to get into the spirit.

THE aptly named Catch 22 out of Sunderland not only caught plenty of fish for the junior members of East End AC but also got a few more anglers hooked on boat angling.

Jeff Moon organised the fourhour trip, made up of 10-14-yearolds. Fish after fish were taken by the excited group who ended the day with 80 cod between 2 and 5lb, with many more being returned.

There are signs that the better cod are starting to show - Phil Gibson taking one of 15lb from JFK Two, which has been taking from 80 to 200 fish a trip with most in the 4-8lb range.

Blue Eye 2, fishing off the Tyne, has taken up to 100 fish with cod to 12lb and ling to 14lb.

Private boat Macer G, skippered by Stephen Brown, made another early start off the Tyne with Paul Hague and John Armitage aboard.

After moving off they were soon into decent fish, taking around 50 in the 4-6lb range with Brown taking the most and the biggest at 9lb. Eddie Stephenson and Chris Hulme were out with Richard Roll on his boat On-ARoll taking fish on most wrecks they visited keeping 27 decent cod, with as many returned, Stephenson taking the best at 9lb.

Private boat Irish Rose, skippered by Richie Carr, had two great days off Sunderland taking 160 fish to 5lb. Sapphire out of Sunderland has taken up to 180 cod between 3-7lb, Ray Thompson taking one of 71/2lb and Tracey Birbeck one of 6lb.

Hartlepool boat Famous has had some good catches fishing off Skinningrove with fish in the 5-8lb range, smaller fish being returned, parties taking up to 120 fish. Boat catches have also included some decent herring, pollock, coalfish, pout and the ever increasingly illusive mackerel.

South Shields pier has proved the best shore venue with the odd cod to 6lb from the Blocks to fresh crab.

Coalfish and some plaice have also been taken. Flounder have been taken in the Wear mainly from Claxheugh and The Timber Beach.

Blyth SAC found a few codling on the rock edges, Mark Foster taking two for 5lb 7oz best 4lb 7oz, Davy Carrs taking three for 5lb 1oz.

There is plenty of fish in the Tyne for match anglers. Colin Bell, on a sweepstake match with 23 for 584c, best 36cm. Callan Stevens won East End's match at Spillers with 228cm, his best 47cm.
