You GO, girls! Westboro Scouts hike 15 miles of Appalachian Trail.

WESTBORO - The GO (Girls Outdoors) Girl Scout group of Westboro recently hiked a 15-mile section of the Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts. In honor of the 100th birthday of Girl Scouts, Scouts have been invited to hike the trail in bits and pieces throughout the year.

Girl Scouts on the East Coast picked a portion of the Appalachian Trail to hike, covering more than 2,000 miles of trail. Members of the Westboro GO group are Hannah Schur, Jillian Smith, Meghan O'Keefe, Audrey Lord and Sophie Scerbin. Adults who accompanied them on their journey were Dan Schur, Mike Smith, Christine O'Keefe, Michelle Scerbin, and Jerry and Marilyn Lyle. The group was led by the Westborough Girl Scout Outdoor consultant Paul Casello.

Base camp was at October Mountain State Forest in Lee.

"I loved spending time with friends and cooking in multiple ovens," Audrey said.

"It was also fun to sleep in a tent in the woods. The screeching owl did startle us though," said Sophie.

During their trip the group saw plenty of wildlife. There were little tree frogs and Luna moths and an owl. They also saw many types of birds, plants, frogs, chipmunks and even a tree chewed by a beaver.

The GO group is planning a hike to Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire. Any girl interested in joining Girl Scouts specifically for this special-interest group should call Judy at (508) 870-1895.

The Great Girl Scout Hike started on March 12, Girl Scouts' 100th birthday, and will end Oct. 31, founder Juliette Gordon Low's 152nd birthday. Honorary chairwoman Mary "Mama Boots" Sands inspired this event by her history of hiking the trail more than 20 years with Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts on the West Coast are hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in celebration of the 100th birthday.
