YOUTH MANAGERS TO RUN WINN-DIXIE STORES FOR A DAY
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- So when's the last

time you heard of a $10 billion business letting young people between the ages of 15 and 20 take over the company?
Well, Winn-Dixie will let 10,000 young leaders companywide be "manager for a day" on Saturday, April 25, during the grocery retailer's third annual Youth Management Day.
"This is an excellent opportunity for us to recognize the tremendous role our young part-time employees play in our daily store operations," said James Kufeldt, president of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WIN). "As a crash course in business education, Youth Management Day also gives the young people better insight into their manager's duties from the other side of the fence."
Youth managers are chosen based on their leadership potential, dependability and enthusiasm for their work. They will don their manager's vests and take over as location managers and co-managers in each store and as department managers in virtually every store department including: produce, market, seafood, dairy/frozen food, deli/bakery, customer service, etc. Their responsibilities will include inventory control, customer relations, creating sales displays and even providing customers with youth manager low prices on selected items throughout the store. "Real" managers will be close by but will take a strictly observational role as much as possible.
The opportunity to experience actual management responsibilities is invaluable to many of the young people involved in the program who may decide to pursue a career in business. But according to Kufeldt, Youth Management Day benefits Winn-Dixie as well: "Since many of our current top and middle managers began their careers with Winn-Dixie as part-time employees, we see this as a chance to train and develop possible future managers. They are allowed the chance to fully realize the responsibility they may assume one day."
According to Kufeldt, the immediate benefits of Youth Management Day are much less tangible, but perhaps even more important. "It is our hope that Youth Management Day will help develop pride and build self esteem in our young associates," he said. "We hope our customers will offer their encouragement as well."
Winn-Dixie is the largest supermarket retailer in the Sunbelt with over 1,200 stores in 13 Southeastern and Southwestern states.
