YOUR SPACE.

Byline: KAREN WILSON

PAINTED wood furniture is increasingly popular, especially in vibrant colours.

If you like this look but are wary about how it will fit with your current home scheme, the best place to experiment is the bedroom. I'm talking about chests of drawers here - nothing kinky!

If you're the creative type, you could get a similar look on a budget with some secondhand furniture and a few coats of eggshell paint for wood. There's a good guide on painting furniture at www.ehow.com.

Yes, it's very girly and your other half might not be convinced, but I think this elegant Pink Fayence chest would look great mixed in with black or cream furniture. It's from www.velvetstore.co.uk. In the Barker & Stonehouse sale you can pick up this Liberty white three-drawer chest at pounds 539. www.barkerandstonehouse.co.uk. I love the colour of this solid wood Marino chest of drawers. Based on an original Louis XV design, it's beautifully carved with bowed dovetail drawers and finished with a hand painted distressed finish and brass lock detail. Each piece is signed and numbered for authenticity. As always, my favourite piece of the five is the most expensive, at pounds 3,875. Tel: 0845 257 2627/ www.sweetpeaandwillow.com. This mid 20th-Century chest of drawers has been given a new lease of life by the designers at The Old Cinema. The target chest is pounds 420. Tel: (020) 8995-4166 www.theoldcinema.co.uk.
