Byline: Jaime Spangrude

Fixing up your home is a BIG job and can be quite challenging at times. For plenty of ideas on style and functionality, look to these guides for some wisdom:

``CHRISTOPHER LOWELL'S SEVEN LAYERS OF DESIGN: FEARLESS, FABULOUS DECORATING'': Lowell shows readers how to utilize his unique layer-by-layer technique to fix up each room in the house in his new book (Clarkson Potter/Publishers; $19.95). The guide features step-by-step instructions, photos and plenty of tips from the expert himself.

``NEW BUILT-INS IDEA BOOK'': If functionality is your goal, then look no further. Leading designers and architects offer more than 250 crisp ideas for blending built-in furniture and storage into the home in this must-have manual (Taunton Press; $19.95). The pictures are great, showing off everything from inviting window seats to drawers that pull out from underneath the bed.

``TIMBERFRAME INTERIORS'': Create that warm and cozy atmosphere you've been longing for by exploring the different techniques in this volume about timberframe construction (Gibbs Smith, Publisher; $24.95). The book is divided into four sections: ``The Basics,'' ``Lighting, Floors and Windows,'' ``Special Places'' and ``Putting It All Together.'' You will also find loads of decorating tips as well as more than 170 color photos.

``KITCHEN MAKEOVERS'': If time is of the essence, then this book is perfect for you (Taunton Press; $14.95). Incorporate style into your kitchen by following the more than 300 step-by-step photographs that will show you how to install a tile backsplash, paint cabinets, laminate floors, upgrade sinks and faucets, and more. These simple projects can be finished in just one weekend with tips from this handy guide.
