YOUR MONEY: TREASURE HUNTERS.

Byline: TV's JAMES BREESE on the amazing world of antiques and collectables

QI HAVE an Arne Jacobsen Egg chair which used to belong to my aunt. She left it to me because I always used to like spinning around in it - it is on a swivel base! It is covered in black fabric which is a little worn. Much as I liked it when I was younger, I do not now. Any suggestions? - Kev Wood, Lincoln

AYOU have inherited a classic piece of modern furniture design. Arne Jacobsen was an important Danish designer and architect. In the late 1950s he was commissioned as architect and interior designer for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Many of the furniture pieces he designed for the hotel were made available for general sale and were manufactured initially by Fritz Hansen. The Egg chair was made in black leather on an aluminium swivel base, but was also produced in fabric. Early examples are extremely sought after and leather ones sell for between pounds 4,000 and pounds 5,000 at auction. Your fabric one in poor condition is going to be worth quite a bit less, but worth selling if you do not like it.

QDO all Steiff teddy bears have a button in their ear and if they do not how can you tell if the bear is by Steiff? Will my collection of later bears be worth anything? - Rachel King, Basingstoke.

AALL collectors dream of finding a Steiff bear, but many do not have ear buttons because they fell out or were removed by safety-conscious parents! To spot a Steiff bear, look for black eyes, a hump at the back and elongated arms. You might even see a hole in the ear where the button was. The best bears can sell for thousands. Your collection of more recent bears is worth keeping as it may well increase in value. Keep the bears out of direct sunlight as it will fade them.WOULD you like James Breese to visit your home and look through your treasures?
