YOUNG ENVIRONMENTALISTS AT 1993 U.N. GLOBAL YOUTH FORUM UNVEIL BOULDER YOUTH DECLARATION; ANNUAL BUSINESS, ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCED

BOULDER, Colo., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) Global Youth Forum, the Boulder Youth Declaration, which highlights the latest and most pressing environmental concerns of youth from around the world, was unveiled. Now in its ninth year, the 1993 forum includes participants from across the United States and 31 different countries and is the largest gathering of young environmentalists in the world.
Also announced today was a $5,000 "S.C. Johnson Wax Leadership Award" scholarship to be presented each year at the Global Youth Forum by S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. The scholarship will assist environmentally active students who are committed to pursuing a business career and will be open to college students aged 19-25 the world over.
"We think there is a critical need to have tomorrow's business leaders better prepared if we want a sustainable world over the long term," said William D. George Jr., CEO of S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. "Through this scholarship program, we are hoping to create the opportunity for increased eco-efficient decision-making skills of future business leaders around the world."
The Boulder Youth Declaration was drafted today by a Youth Task Force consisting of representatives from each of the workshops conducted earlier in the forum and other interested youth participants. The declaration summarizes concerns expressed in these workshops and touches on issues such as deforestation, equitable use of natural resources, sustainable economic models and the need to embrace biocultural diversity.
Writers of the declaration state: "As partial inheritants of the Earth, we must recognize other members of the ecosystem and our unavoidable interdependence. ... United as a whole, we believe people can rescue the Earth from further debilitation." The declaration urges the United Nations to support the youth environmental solidarity movement and allow it to voice and pursue its dream through the U.N. and its sister agencies. They encourage the U.N. to democratically renegotiate "free" trade agreements and to promote the allocation of natural resources to reflect their trade -- an equitable distribution and utilization of resources. The declaration concludes with a request from international youth: "We simply ask for global partnership between generations."
The Global Youth Forum is the cornerstone of UNEP's Outreach Programme and is coordinated by the regional director's office of UNEP, Dr. Noel Brown. The corporate patron of the forum is S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. (more commonly known as S.C. Johnson Wax), headquartered in Racine, Wis. Recently, Sam Johnson, chairman of the company, was inducted into Fortune magazine's National Business Hall of Fame for his visionary environmental leadership during his company's major worldwide expansion throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
