Not deterred by this, she started her course and settled into her role as a young engineer at the age of 16 as the only female in her department.

Keen to promote careers in engineering, Gemma has recently become a mentor for a sixth form student and has also spoken at schools and university career days offering advice on education pathways to inspire others into engineering.

Thomas Conneely A REMARKABLE winner for this year's Young Achiever Award, Thomas graduated in 2011 with a First Class Honours Degree, gaining two academic awards.

Whilst at university, he was active in both academic and social activities and was well liked and respected by both his peers and the academic staff. Since graduating, he has found employment in a local practice and been very active in his professional body, recently taking up Chair of their young professionals group.

He continues to visit and helps organise a series of events for Northumbria University to raise awareness of the industry. He was involved in the set up and development of the G4C North East group and very much believes in promoting young professionals to engage with not only their professional bodies but also Government and other sectors. Despite his busy professional schedule, Thomas is also committed to raising money for charity having undertaken various challenges such as: the C2C bike ride.
