WHY is it considered good luck to find a penny? "FIND a penny, pick it up. All day long, you'll have good luck"... most people have probably heard this rhyme, or some variation of it.

Yet finding a penny and picking it up is a relatively new spin on an old superstition.

Once people believed that metal was a gift from the gods, given to man for protection against evil. From that belief, it was thought any metal would bring a person good luck.

That is partly the reason why people hang horseshoes over their doorways, wear charm bracelets or even hang on to a good luck coin.
