- GEORGE AND JANETTE OUTHWAITE My days with the ATC at Thornaby I WONDER if any readers can help me? I was a cadet with 1261 Squadron Air Training Corp during the 1950s. I know the squadron no longer exists and I would like to know what became of it? Was it disbanded, amalgamated and if so when? I spent a lot of my teens on Thornaby Aerodrome, first with the ATC, then with 2608 Squadron Royal Auxilary Airforce Regiment until it was disbanded, then finally with 3608 Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force Fighter Control unit until it eventually went the same way.
Sadly I suppose that most of the members of these squadrons are no longer with us as a lot of them were WI veterans and I was a teenager then and I am now 73.
I have lived in Tasmania for the past 38 years and have not lived in England for more than 45 years but like many Boro-born lads I still have an affection for the area and read the Gazette on line most days and still follow the fortunes of the Boro.
- PETER ELLINGSEN, Tasmania? We have contacted Peter and asked him to send his pictures of RAF Thornaby in the 1950s.
We hope to publish them in a future edition. If you have any information that would help Peter about RAF Thornaby then please write to Remember When. RW
