YOSHI'S NEW ISLAND Nintendo 3DS PS29.99 **

The recent Luigi's Mansion and Kid Icarus games proved that Nintendo's 3DS console is the perfect platform to re-invent the Super Mario series. Sadly, Yoshi's New Island is bereft of anything new whatsoever, and proves largely inferior to its 19-year-old predecessor.

Much of the core gameplay remains unchanged. Nintendo's cutesy dino sidekick has to defend the baby Mario riding on his back, flutter jump from platform to platform and chow down on enemies, turning them into eggs which can be shot back at foes.

But Yoshi's New Island lacks any meaningful challenge and platforming sections are too easy. There are nice visual touches, but YNI displays an absence of polish and deserves so much more.
