YORK INTERNATIONAL PLANT ACHIEVES ISO 9002 CERTIFICATION

NORMAN, Okla., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- YORK International Corporation's (NYSE: YRK) Norman manufacturing plant has achieved quality system certification under the requirements of the International Standards Organization (ISO).
Earning ISO 9002 Certification signifies that YORK's quality system is consistent with international manufacturing standards. ISO 9000 rankings demonstrate a manufacturer's ability to control operating processes to meet predetermined specifications on a continuing basis.
YORK's Oklahoma facility is its first U.S.-based HVAC/R plant to earn the ISO distinction, and is among the first 10 manufacturing firms operating in the state of Oklahoma to receive this prestigious award.
Formal certification for the YORK plant was marked by a May 20 (1993) presentation here by Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance, Ltd. Lloyd's Register is an independent United Kingdom-based organization accredited to perform ISO quality system evaluations.
The certification was presented to Scott J. Boxer, vice president and general manager of YORK's Central Environmental Systems (CES) division. In accepting the award on behalf of YORK's 800 Norman employees, Boxer said, "Quality is a word that's spoken by many companies, but many more pay only lip service to it. Here at the YORK Norman plant, you've proven that quality is truly a way of life. You've shown all of us that quality isn't just a matter of an adjustment here and there. It's a matter of devotion to continuous improvement."
 "Under a Microscope"
Although YORK officials feel ISO certification will help with the company's sales and marketing efforts in the United States and abroad, those same officials point out that applying for the recognition could carry some risks. "In securing ISO certification, we voluntarily put our products, policies and procedures under a microscope to see how we measure up against the best companies around the world," said Bob Fowler, YORK director of plant operations. "ISO certification means we've made the grade, but it wasn't automatic by any means," he added.
Fowler acknowledged that earning ISO certification required YORK to establish formal Job Skills Training and Line-Ownership-of-Quality programs, System Improvement Teams, as well as other quality enhancements.
 TQM Initiated in 1990
ISO certification is the latest achievement in a global YORK Total Quality Management (TQM) program initiated in 1991 by YORK Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert N. Pokelwaldt. The program addresses quality systems relating to service, marketing, purchasing, manufacturing and design engineering.
Through its YORK Worldwide Quality Council, comprised of YORK officials from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Mexico, the corporation in 1991 adopted ISO 9000 quality system standards as minimums for YORK business units worldwide.
"What ISO certification really amounts to is the documentation phase of implementing TQM," noted Ralph Morgan, YORK CES director of quality.
"TQM requires us to track quality and customer satisfaction as key business measures, just as we track other financial assessments like cost, profit and return-on-investment. We've proven over the past two years that as we improve quality and customer satisfaction, the benefits show clearly on our bottom line," Morgan added.
Ongoing post-certification quality systems management assessments by Lloyd's Register are required by the International Standards Organization to retain ISO certification.
