YELLOW FREIGHT SYSTEM ANNOUNCES DISCOUNT ROLLBACK

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Yellow Freight System plans to implement a 2-percent discount roll-back to take effect Aug. 2, 1993. This action is necessary to restore revenue yields to satisfactory levels.
The decision to adjust rates through a discount roll-back was based on Yellow's desire to make it easy for our customers to implement this mid-year change. Because a discount roll-back does not impact base rates, there is no need for customers to conduct a complex base rate review. It also eliminates the administrative process of reissuing and implementing a new base rate tariff and associated rating products. Most importantly, a discount roll-back promotes greater industry stability by stopping the destructive cycle of price discounting.
Intense competitive discounting pressure has neutralized virtually all of the 4.6 percent increase implemented last January. With the implementation of this discount roll-back, Yellow will forego a January 1994 rate adjustment. However, the company will not rule out a re-evaluation next spring.
Yellow Freight System is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yellow Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: YELL) which owns companies specializing in transportation, logistics, and information technologies and recently acquired Preston Corporation and its carrier subsidiaries, Preston Trucking, Smalley Transportation and Saia Motor Freight.
