YELLOW ANNOUNCES NETWORK IMPROVEMENTS

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- George E. Powell III, president and chief executive officer of Yellow Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: YELL), announced today that Yellow's primary motor carrier subsidiary, Yellow Freight System, Inc., is undertaking a long-term process of network redesign, including terminal consolidation and realignment, to improve customer service and reduce costs. Accordingly, Yellow will take a non-recurring, after-tax charge to earnings in the second quarter of $11.2 million, or 40 cents per share, for restructuring.
These network improvements are the consequence of an ongoing effort to enhance Yellow Freight's competitiveness by reducing freight handling and increasing freight flow flexibility. While terminal realignment will result in some terminal consolidation, total service area will not be reduced. The results will be faster transit times, higher levels of customer service and lower costs. In addition, larger service territory per terminal will mean more opportunities to expand the successful Yellow Metroliner service. Yellow Metroliner provides accelerated two-day delivery schedules between major metropolitan areas.
According to Powell, "The marketplace is dynamic and shipper needs continuously evolve. Yellow companies are committed to remaining responsive to those needs."
Yellow Corporation is a holding company owning transportation and transportation related subsidiaries. Yellow companies, operating throughout the United States and in Canada and Mexico, provide longhaul and regional LTL carriage, logistics management and information technology. European services are available via an alliance with Netherlands-based Frans Maas.
