YEAR END VOLUME UP AT MINNEAPOLIS GRAIN EXCHANGE

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- 1993 was the fourth consecutive year of volume growth at the Minneapolis Grain Exchange, making it one of the fastest growing futures exchanges in the United States. Total volume traded in 1993 was 877,005 futures and options contracts, up 14.5 percent from 1992. Weather caused planting uncertainty and flooding wreaked havoc on cultivation and transportation. When the Spring Wheat crop was harvested, the market was concerned about quality.
In 1993, Pacific Northwestern producers and elevator managers increased their use of the Exchange's White Wheat contract. The White Wheat contract has proved to be a very effective hedge for White Wheat.
The Exchange also developed the world's only seafood futures contract in 1993. Shrimp futures and options, launched on July 12, traded nearly 2,000 contracts.
1993 Minneapolis Grain Exchange volume highlights:
SPRING WHEAT FUTURES: 822,869 contracts traded, representing 4.1 billion bushels, an 11 percent increase from 1992.
