YAMAHA MOTOR TO CO-DEVELOP FOUR-STROKE POWERHEADS FOR OUTBOARD MOTORS WITH MERCURY MARINE

CYPRESS, Calif., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Citing a mutual interest in protecting the environment, Yamaha Marine Power, Cypress, Calif., whose parent company is Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd., Japan, and Mercury Marine, whose parent company is Brunswick Corp., Skokie, Ill., have reached an agreement to co-develop four-stroke powerheads for use in outboard motors in the United States and world markets.
The powerheads developed will be used in outboard motors separately manufactured by each company and independently marketed under the brand names of each company.
"Through this joint development, both companies will be able to expand product lines, giving boaters worldwide more choices," said Ted Kimura, chairman, Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A.
Yamaha estimated the 1992 world market for four-stroke outboards at 30,000 units, of which 5,000 were manufactured by Yamaha.
The first outboard under this joint four-stroke development agreement will be a 50 hp four cylinder model which will be introduced as a 1995 model. For Yamaha, the larger four-stroke will be a line expansion to its four-stroke 9.9 hp outboard, introduced in 1985.
Kimura went on to say, "Additional four-stroke powerheads may be developed later in the 5 to 50 hp range to meet user needs."
Here are the major points of the Yamaha-Brunswick agreement:
 -- Powerheads will be co-developed.
-- The term of agreement is five years from the beginning of production for each developed model.
-- Manufacturing will be the responsibility of both parties, although the companies will try to use common components as much as possible.
Officials from Brunswick and Yamaha believe interest in four-stroke outboards will grow as public concern for the environment increases. The companies have a history of working together, with Yamaha continuing to manufacture selected models of Brunswick's Mariner outboards for world markets.
