CALABASAS, Calif., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Xircom Inc. (NASDAQ: XIRC), the leader in portable connectivity, today announced two first-of-its-kind products -- the Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem(TM) and the Xircom Pocket Ethernet+Modem(TM). Both products are the only products available that deliver both local and remote LAN connectivity and fax/modem communications in an inexpensive and convenient "all-in- one" solution. Addressing the networking needs of PC users inside and outside of a building, Xircom's high-performance adapters offer the convenience of an integrated solution, and eliminate the cost of a separate device for each function.
A two-in-one package with broad compatibility offerings, the integrated Ethernet LAN and fax/modem adapters provide a cost-efficient and flexible solution. At $699 (U.S. list price), Xircom adapters are 15 to 25 percent less expensive than a separate LAN adapter and modem.
The Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem and the Xircom Pocket Ethernet+Modem are particularly useful to mobile professionals who need both local and remote LAN connectivity as well as powerful fax/modem communications. Users can fax a document or call up a bulletin board service while remaining logged onto the network, since both products offer concurrent LAN and modem operations. Support of third-party remote LAN applications, such as pcAnywhere, Carbon Copy and Close-Up, allows users to easily integrate the adapter/modems into their existing networks.
"Xircom's charter is to help make mobile computing easier and more cost-efficient for the end user," state Dirk Gates, president and chief executive officer of Xircom. "By broadening the range of mobile users' communications with both local and remote connectivity, Xircom will drive our customers' computing capabilities even further forward."
Xircom adapters meet the needs of today's and tomorrow's users. They deliver 10 megabits per second (Mbps) performance when connected to an 802.3 Ethernet LAN and transmit at up to 14.400 (Kbps) via a V.32bis modem. They also take full advantage of V.42 technology for error detection/correction, V.42bis for data compression, and V.17 for the fastest send/receive fax transmissions. These features are ideal for the latest PCMCIA-slotted notebooks and are also well-suited for upgrading from older LAN adapters and modems that lack high performance and fax capabilities.
The adapters meet a range of notebook computer and network operating system requirements by supporting drivers for all popular network operating systems, including Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager, Banyan VINES and DEC PATHWORKS. Both adapters feature integrated terminal emulation and fax send/receive software for both DOS and Windows. Since the adapters are the only integrated LAN/modem products that are software programmable, users can upgrade their Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem or their Xircom Pocket Ethernet+Modem with new features and enhancements via bulletin board or diskette.
 CreditCard Ethernet+Modem
Xircom's CreditCard Ethernet+Modem is the only adapter to integrate an Ethernet network connection and fax/modem capabilities through a notebook computer's Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Release 2.0-compatible card slot. The Type II card measures 5 millimeters (mm) thick by 54mm wide by 85.6mm long and fits into any Type II or Type III slot.
"Today's users want a variety of options allowing them freedom of choice," said Jim Soriano, director of Xircom's LAN/WAN product line. "We developed the CreditCard Ethernet+Modem so that notebook PC users have a flexible solution to overcome the 'slot crunch' problem. Now, a one-slot user can have both LAN and fax/modem connectivity at the same time; and a two-slot user can have both communications functions as well as an additional slot free for another card, such as memory or flash storage."
 Pocket Ethernet+Modem
The first parallel port LAN modem adapter, the Xircom Pocket+Ethernet Modem takes advantage of Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) technology. It delivers LAN throughput comparable to that of 8-bit internal network cards. Xircom's high performance parallel port interface allows the Pocket Ethernet+Modem to outperform conventional serial port modems. It accomplishes high throughput by eliminating the UART (universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter) chip that is the typical bottleneck in serial modem communications, particularly with notebook PCs.
The Pocket Ethernet+Modem also features Xircom's Phantom Power Cable, freeing users from the constraints of electrical outlets and AC power supplies by powering the adapter directly from their PCs.
 Pricing and Availability
The Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem and the Pocket Ethernet+Modem work with IBM 386/compatible or higher computers running DOS, Windows or Windows for Workgroups. Both adapters have a suggested U.S. list price of $699. The Pocket Ethernet+Modem is available immediately through Xircom's international network of distributors and resellers, and the CreditCard Ethernet+Modem will ship later this fall.
Xircom's adapters come with a comprehensive two-year warranty including toll-free technical support, a high-speed bulletin board system and overnight shipment of replacement units. In addition, the adapters will be covered under Xircom's free lifetime Customer Assurance Pledge (CAP) program, which is included with every purchase of Xircom product in the United States. This allows users to trade in their current Xircom LAN adapter directly to Xircom and receive a 50 percent discount from the list price of their new purchase. And, for the first 90 days after initial product shipment, users can exchange their existing modem, from any manufacturer, and receive a 50 percent discount from the list price of their new purchase.
