XIRCOM ANNOUNCES ENHANCED DRIVER SUPPORT FOR ITS TOKEN RING ADAPTERS; VERSION 3.1 EXTENDS SUPPORT FOR OS/2 2.0 AND FOR ENHANCED PARALLEL PORT
CALABASAS, Calif., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Xircom (NASDAQ: XIRC), the leader in external connectivity solutions for local area networks (LANs), announced the release of SmartRing Software Version 3.1 for its Pocket Token Ring Adapter II and External Token Ring Adapter product families.
SmartRing Software Version 3.1 includes support for IBM OS/2 2.0 as well as continued support for OS/2 1.3. In addition to Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) drivers for both DOS and OS/2, Xircom's Token Ring Adapters are supplied with a full range of network drivers, including Novell NetWare (IPX) and Open Data-Link Interface (ODI) for Novell networks, as well as a complete LAN Support Program (LSP). This complete software package provides support for all major network operating systems as well as host communications. Support for the Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) technology is incorporated in all DOS drivers in Version 3.1. This new version works with all models of Xircom Token Ring Adapters.
Dirk Gates, president and chief executive officer, Xircom, said, "With IBM's recent introduction of OS/2 2.0, we accelerated our development efforts to provide support for OS/2 2.0 to satisfy the needs of our Token Ring customers. This effort further demonstrates our intent to maintain compatibility with our extensive list of network operating systems as well as to provide flexible external LAN connectivity and mainframe communications."
Gates continued, "EPP significantly improves the performance of the parallel port in Intel 386SL-based notebook computers. The addition of support for EPP provides our customers with the ability to have the ease of an external LAN connection with the throughput similar to that of a commonly used internal network interface adapter."
The Pocket Token Ring Adapter II is automatically configured via software for 4 or 16 megabits per second ring speed and features SmartRing software co-developed with Madge Networks. SmartRing software minimizes driver memory requirements on the PC by loading code into the adapter's memory. The Pocket Token Ring Adapter II is available for IBM Type 1 media or Type 3 media. The External Token Ring Adapter incorporates multiple wiring interfaces for IBM Type 1 media and Type 3 media, and allows the use of a local printer under DOS.
The new software will be shipping with the Pocket Token Ring Adapter II and External Token Ring Adapters in June and also will be available to registered users (subject to the terms of Xircom's Software License Agreement) by accessing Xircom's Bulletin Board System. Customers can also contact Xircom's customer support at 800-874-4428 or at 818-878-7600 from outside the United States.
Enhanced Parallel Port is a technology developed by Intel, Xircom and Zenith Data Systems (ZDS) to significantly increase parallel port data throughput. EPP is implemented by Intel in the 25MHz 82360SL I/O companion chip for Intel386 SL CPU systems. Numerous leading computer manufacturers such as ZDS, Compaq, Dell and NEC have announced next- generation notebook computers that incorporate the 386SL microprocessor.
Founded in 1988, Xircom is the leader in the development and manufacture of external connectivity solutions for the personal computer market. In addition to its Token Ring Adapters, the company produces a family of Pocket LAN Adapters and External LAN Adapters for Ethernet, 3270 and ARCnet networks, and Network Simplicity, the first integrated networking and connectivity solution that combines the simplicity of external LAN adapters and the convenience of a peer-to-peer network operating system.
