XEROX UNDERTAKES FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR OUTSOURCING GLOBAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT OPERATIONS

 Goals: greater productivity, reduced cost
 ROCHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Xerox Corporation

(NYSE: XRX) -- in an effort to increase productivity and more effectively marshal resources -- today announced that it has engaged several vendors to help determine the feasibility of outsourcing portions of its global Information Management operations.
The Xerox Information Management organization encompasses more than 3,500 people worldwide, who deliver and maintain applications, and computer and network services linking Xerox business operations. In addition to an extensive user-support network, the Xerox Information Management organization operates major data centers in the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil.
"The goal of this evaluation is to establish the feasibility for ensuring the delivery of world-class Information Management services to our internal customers through a third-party partnership," said Patricia M. Wallington, Xerox vice president and chief information officer. "We also view this as a potential opportunity to achieve substantial cost savings over time, although the amount will depend on the conclusions of the feasibility study."
The feasibility study is designed to evaluate the benefits of outsourcing various Xerox Information Management operations, and is consistent with the previously stated corporate objective to increase productivity.
No final decision on the outsourcing option is expected for several months. There is no immediate effect on Xerox Information Management employees.
"A third party whose core competency revolves around the delivery of Information Management services may be able to access and leverage new technologies more quickly and bring large-scale operating efficiencies to the existing Xerox environment," Wallington said. "It will allow Xerox IM management to focus on creating the Information Management environment for the future."
The Xerox Information Management operation supports most of the company's major applications, including order processing, customer service, manufacturing support, payroll, and inventory management; and an extensive information network.
