 BY THEIR CEO TO CREATE A "NEW PRODUCTIVITY"
 ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- A challenge to create a "new productivity" was given here today by Paul A. Allaire, chairman and chief executive officer of Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX), to an assemblage of 6,000 Xerox people at the Riverside Convention Center and, via satellite television, to 1,700 more at meeting sites in metropolitan Los Angeles and Dallas.
 Speaking at Xerox Teamwork '92, the company's tenth annual Teamwork Day celebration, Allaire noted that "old productivity was defined in terms of doing things cheaper and faster," whereas "new productivity is value driven. It's anchored in the creation of knowledge ... the elimination of waste ... and the abandonment of unproductive work.
 "Most importantly," he declared, "value creation grows the economic pie and creates jobs."
 Allaire stated that his challenge to Xerox people is twofold.
 "First," he urged, "practice uncommon teamwork ... Understand that we cannot be successful as individuals unless we pull together as a team. Second, focus on the document. Think about it. Learn about it. Help our customers leverage its power. Leverage it in your own work."
 Allaire thanked "all of the members of Team Xerox" for their "...continued commitment and energy.

 He also thanked Jack Sheinkman, international president of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union, AFL-CIO, CLC, and Anthony Costanza, international vice president and manager of the union's Rochester Joint Board, for the union's cooperation and commitment in building employee involvement and quality improvement. The ACTWU represents Xerox hourly paid, manufacturing employees.
 "We believe that the Amalgamated-Xerox partnership is world class," Allaire said. "It makes us a better company, and it is a source of competitive advantage and corporate pride."
 Scheinkman also addressed the transcontinental Xerox gathering from Rochester.
 The annual Xerox Teamwork Days provide a showcase for the achievements of Xerox quality improvement teams at every level of the company -- from mailroom assistants to senior managers. The event is also an occasion to share this corporate culture with customers and suppliers. Display booths the teams use to share their achievements, plus buttons and banners, give the day trade-show atmosphere.
 Teams from the United Kingdom and Japan participated today in Rochester, alongside teams from the eastern region of the United States.
 In addition to 7,700 Xerox employee participants and attendees, some 3,300 Xerox customer and supplier guests attended Teamwork '92 at the three meeting sites: Rochester's Riverside Convention Center; Stouffer's Concourse Hotel in El Segundo, Calif., and the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, Texas.
 Through the facilities of the Xerox Education Network, an additional 12,000 Xerox people and 3,000 customers watched the proceedings at 71 nationwide U.S. sites. Still more watched the Teamwork '92 telecast at facilities of Xerox Canada Inc. and at some Rank Xerox Limited locations in Europe.
 The kind of problem-solving and quality improvement processes celebrated at Teamwork '92 have helped Xerox to win back market share from its Japanese and other competitors without assistance from the federal government. They also enabled the Xerox document-processing business to earn national quality awards in nine different countries -- Japan, Canada, the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Mexico and the United States.
