XEROX INTRODUCES OCR SOFTWARE FOR WINDOWS: SETS NEW PRICE/PERFORMANCE STANDARD
ROCHESTER, N.Y., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) today introduced TextBridge -- a $99 software program for Windows that breathes new life into a "dead" document. TextBridge "reads" digital images faxed to a PC, or hardcopy that is scanned into a PC, and converts the information in to industry-standard editable formats -- such as WordPerfect, Word and Ami Pro, as well as leading spreadsheets and databases. The TextBridge Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology eliminates the tedious and time-consuming task of "re-keyboarding," or retyping, magazine articles, memos, faxes, and other documents that otherwise cannot be edited electronically. "For the first time, one product has addressed the three requirements essential to Windows users who desire to unlock the productivity advantages afforded by OCR software -- affordability, accuracy and ease-of-use," said Ed Mallen, vice president, software products, Xerox Imaging Systems. "In effect, TextBridge can teach your PC to type, so you don't have to."
PARC Technology Empowers the PC User
TextBridge leverages advancements from Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) to redefine the OCR industry standard in terms of price and performance. TextBridge features an enhanced version of XIS' proven OCR engine, combined with a simplified user interface and the capacity to more accurately process faxed and degraded documents. In developing TextBridge, research in image morphology -- examining the structure of documents -- has transitioned from the PARC laboratory to the marketplace. The software learns information about the document's structure to aid in recognition and formatting; and an increased level of automation improves accuracy with less user intervention. "TextBridge reaffirms our commitment to make Xerox's PARC technology available to a wider range of users," said John Seely Brown, Xerox chief scientist and director of PARC. "By combining XIS' long-standing expertise in developing and marketing OCR products with PARC's tradition of developing leading-edge technology, TextBridge provides PC users with a superior solution for document recognition. TextBridge's ease of use and superior accuracy make it ideal for a wide variety of business users who can significantly benefit from converting faxes, photocopies and other printed documents to electronic form. The software empowers the general business population with "live" documents that can be quickly and easily revised and updated as needed.
Packed with Performance
Textbridge uses a Windows Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) interface, enabling users to easily access OCR while working in other applications, and a preview window, which allows users to view images on-screen to assess image quality or delineate only a portion of the page for recognition. The software converts all leading word-processing, spreadsheet and database applications, and can recognize text written in French, Italian, German, Spanish, as well as English in virtually any typeface on a wide variety of documents. TextBridge OCR software uses artificial intelligence to "learn" as it processes text, and applies this knowledge to subsequent pages.
The Facts on Fax and OCR
The technical limitations inherent with the faxed document -- poor resolution, skewed alignment and unpredictable orientation -- have, in the past, confounded many PC-based OCR programs and frustrated their users. TextBridge includes enhancements XIS has made to its core OCR software -- including neural networks -- which significantly improve accuracy for fax and other degraded documents. If a page is skewed, as often happens with a fax or scanned image, TextBridge can recognize text with up to a five percent rotation. TextBridge will also automatically detect and correct the orientation of a faxed or scanned page.
Price and Availability
TextBridge is scheduled to ship in June and will sell for $99. The product is available directly from XIS at 800-248-6550 and comes complete with a 30-day unconditional money-back guarantee of customer satisfaction. -0- 5/19/93 /CONTACT: Janet Knudsen of Xerox Imaging Systems, 508-977-2125, or Kelly Morris of The Weber Group, 617-661-7900/
