XEROX GROUP COMMUNICATIONS ANNOUNCES PICTURETEL VIDEO ENHANCEMENTS FOR THE XEROX LIVEBOARD

PALO ALTO, Calif., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Interactive communications industry leaders PictureTel Corporation (NASDAQ: PTCL) and Xerox Group Communications today announced the availability of an integrated system that incorporates the innovative Xerox LiveBoard(TM) with PictureTel videoconferencing technology.
With the LiveBoard, users in one location can work interactively to develop and modify shared documents and images with work teams at another site. By integrating the two technologies, users now can see and hear their distant colleagues via a PictureTel videoconference while simultaneously working on displayed documents on the LiveBoard.
The videoconference is shown in a resizeable and moveable window on the LiveBoard while PictureTel's high-fidelity audio is played through the system's built-in stereo amplifier and speakers. All conferencing information can be transported through the PictureTel system over any switched digital service, including ISDN and Switched-56 lines.
"Xerox has developed a highly proficient whiteboard system for real time communications," said Robert F. Mitro, senior vice president and general manager-worldwide sales and service group for PictureTel. "Merged with our industry leading videoconferencing technology, the LiveBoard provides business customers with a complete electronic communications environment."
Introduced in May, 1993, the LiveBoard is the first collaborative solution to bring the power of computer technology into the boardroom. Using a familiar chalkboard interface, users write, edit, annotate and draw directly on the LiveBoard's 5-foot-wide interactive display surface. Based on standard Intel 486 and Microsoft Windows(TM) technology, the LiveBoard lets users share applications like Microsoft Excel(R) and Lotus 1-2-3(R) in a group environment. Advanced communications features also let users share information with co-workers at remote sites.
"Working with PictureTel has helped solidify Group Communications's lead in delivering next generation office information and communications systems to businesses, educators and individuals," said Richard Bruce, president of Group Communications. "The full interactivity offered by LiveBoard on high resolution images is complemented by PictureTel's live interactive video and audio capabilities. This partnership is a big win for both companies' customers."
The LiveBoard incorporates a 67-inch color, rear-projected active matrix display; a wireless pen; an Intel 486 processor unit running Microsoft Windows; and LiveWorks(TM) Meeting Board(TM) software that lets users create images that can be edited, colorized, annotated, erased, saved, retrieved, or printed -- providing virtually unlimited creative space. The LiveBoard comes equipped with a 14.4Kb modem for document conferencing over standard voice telephone lines.
Founded in 1984, PictureTel Corporation, headquartered in Danvers, Mass., develops, manufactures and markets a full range of visual telecommunications solutions that are "Redefining the Way the World Meets."
