XEROX ENTERS PERSONAL-COMPUTER PRINTER MARKET WITH PATENTED INK-JET TECHNOLOGY;

 Compact Printer Delivers Laser-Like Quality;
 Expected to Retail for Less Than $300
 ROCHESTER, N.Y., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) today introduced the least expensive printer in the company's history -- enabled by patented ink-jet technology -- to print personal-computer documents with high resolution and at speeds substantially faster than most home printers.
 The Xerox Personal Printer 4004, marketed by the company's Personal Document Products Division, is being sold through retail stores including The Wiz, a 40-store chain of electronic superstores serving the New York City, Long Island and New Jersey metropolitan area, and Office America, a 22-store chain of office superstores located in Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina. Other retailers nationwide are expected to handle the product soon.
 The Xerox 4004 is expected to broaden the market for PC users who are looking for alternatives to low-quality, high-noise dot-matrix printers, of which there are more than 50 million worldwide.
 The 4004 uses Xerox developed and patented ink-jet technology to produce 300-by-300 dot-per-inch resolution, comparable in performance to today's home laser printers, most of which cost twice as much.
 Because of the design of its 128-nozzle print head, the unit produces two lines of text or graphics in a single pass, enabling it to yield approximately three pages of text a minute. It prints on both letter- and legal-size paper as well as transparencies, labels and No. 10 envelopes, applications commonly found in home offices.
 In addition to the standard Xerox parts and labor warranty and the Total Satisfaction Guarantee, the Xerox Personal Printer is backed by a special combination of service and support called the X-traProtection(SM) program. The program includes access to a toll-free customer help number and exchange service.
 "Because we expect many of our customers to be located in homes and small offices, we are instituting an exchange service program that we believe will be very convenient," said Robert M. Berman, vice president and general manager, printers, Personal Document Products. "Should a printer need service, customers will be asked to call Xerox and request a replacement unit, which will be sent directly to their door within 48 hours. The original unit will be picked up in the process and returned to Xerox, all at no cost to the user."
 The 4004 is intended for use with PC-compatible computers and industry-standard software. It is expected to sell for less than $299 at retail.
 Xerox manufactures the print head at its microfabrication facilities in Canandaigua, N.Y., 30 miles from Rochester. Tokyo Electric Co., of Tokyo, assembles the printer. For more information, contact Xerox Corporation at 800-ASK-XEROX, extension 4004.
