XEROX AND MICROSOFT COLLABORATE TO INTEGRATE PCS AND A NEW GENERATION OF DOCUMENT PRODUCTS
STAMFORD, Conn., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) today announced a broad strategic partnership to realize their common goal of integrating personal computers and document products, such as digital copiers. Under an agreement in principle signed by the two companies, Xerox and Microsoft will jointly define application programming interfaces (APIs) and will leverage their strengths in product development and marketing. The companies have agreed to deliver a new generation of integrated document products and PC software solutions in their respective market areas. Xerox and Microsoft are also collaborating on related business initiatives that will be announced later. "We're excited to be partnering with Xerox because of its position as The Document Company and its heritage in imaging technology," said Bill Gates, chairman and CEO of Microsoft. "This partnership, allowing the integration of document products and PCs, will result in products that change the way people work." Paul A. Allaire, chairman and CEO of Xerox, added, "Microsoft -- the leader and innovator in personal computer software -- has a vision of 'information at your fingertips' that supports Xerox' goal of improving interaction among people through documents. Together, Xerox and Microsoft will define and develop technologies that change the way in which PC users access and use documents."
Xerox and Microsoft share an understanding of the productivity problems people face in the workplace. Personal computers and document products are often disconnected or incompatible, resulting in decreased workflow and productivity. The companies will work together to define and develop software products that streamline processes for the creation, production and distribution of documents. This opportunity represents a rapidly growing market segment and incremental growth area for both Xerox and Microsoft.
AREAS OF COOPERATION
Under the agreement in principle, Xerox and Microsoft would: -- Jointly specify APIs, in the areas of image processing and remote diagnostics that will be open to feedback from other industry participants; -- Cooperate in other technology areas including color technology, workflow computing, conferencing and electronic whiteboards; -- Cooperate on marketing, sales and promotional activities. Specific terms are subject to negotiation of a final agreement between the two companies. Xerox Corporation is a global enterprise serving the worldwide document processing market.
