XEROX 5090 REMOTE DIAGNOSTICS SYSTEMINCREASES UPTIME IN PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTS

ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- An automated system that spots potential problems in the Xerox 5090 duplicator, Xerox Corporation's (NYSE: XRX) flagship high-speed reprographics product, is now available.
The latest member in the Xerox Remote Interactive Communications (RIC) family, Remote Diagnostics continuously monitors the duplicator's performance, protecting document production from failures. By detecting difficulties up to four days before a failure takes place, the system allows repairs to be scheduled, helping customers avoid costly production disruptions.
Onboard diagnostics in the 5090 evaluate 1,300 indicators every 15 minutes. If a potential problem is detected, the system calls an expert computer in Rochester, N.Y. over ordinary telephone lines. The expert system alerts the customer support service center to immediately schedule repairs at a time convenient to the customer.
The 5090 sets the copier industry's benchmark printing speed, at 135 copies per minute, with low cost-per-impression and superior copy quality. It is designed for commercial and quick print operations and in-plant print shops.
"With Remote Diagnostics, customers gain the advantage of more effectively predicting production completion. They are able to better schedule their time and control costs, while conserving resources by avoiding failures," said Dan Cholish, vice president and general manager, High Volume Reprographics Business Unit, Xerox Document Production Systems Division.
The Remote Diagnostics system also performs an automatic meter read and transmits the information to an electronic billing system. This method improves accuracy and avoids costly billing errors.
There is no charge for the Remote Diagnostics service. The customer provides only a standard, voice-grade telephone line, which can be shared, for transmission of the data toll-free to a Xerox service computer center located in Rochester, N.Y. The central computer is on- line 24 hours a day, comparing actual performance data with factory specifications.
The system is available April 1, 1993.
