XC season starts tomorrow.
THE cross-country season gets under way again this weekend when Colwyn Bay and Wrexham athletes compete in the North Staffordshire League. The tough league opens tomorrow with the first fixture at the Knights Grange Sports Complex in Winsford, Cheshire, with races for all age groups from under-11 to masters. Colwyn Bay and Wrexham have traditionally sent teams to compete in the four-round league because of the quality of the junior competitions and to give the seniors extra race sharpness for the North Wales league, which begins the folllowing weekend. In last season's North Staffordshire Cross-Country League, Abigail Backshall of Colwyn Bay AC was crowned under-17 women's champion following a consistent campaign. Backshall finished second in the first three races - all to different competitors - before winning the final race to seal the title. After tomorrow's opening round in Winsford (races start 12.30pm), the North Staffordshire league continues with fixtures in Stafford on October 26, Weston Coyney on November 16 and Leek on November 30.
