 X/OPEN LAUNCHES APPLICATION REGISTRATION PROGRAM;
 EXPANDS MARKET OPPORTUNITY FOR SOFTWARE SUPPLIERS
 SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- X/Open Co. Ltd. today announced a new program designed to provide visibility for software suppliers developing open systems products running on XPG-branded products.
 The new program, called the Application Registration Program, provides a method for software suppliers to provide a statement of conformance to the X/Open XPG specification, and users, in turn, to more easily locate XPG-branded products.
 "Large users, in particular, who have standardized on the X/Open XPG specification as the basis for large procurements, have expressed a need for a resource that identifies software products that run on XPG-branded platforms," said Jim Hietala, X/Open's XPG marketing program manager.
 In order to qualify for registration, a product must meet several criteria. First, it must run on two or more XPG-branded platforms, each with different architectures, and maintain enabling interfaces across multiple platforms. It also must be currently available on the platforms indicated and supported by the supplier. Applications written using an enabler must have been written with an X/Open-branded or X/Open-registered enabler.
 "The Application Registration Program has been implemented as a result of the X/Open user requirements process," said Mack Gardner, executive director of information systems planning at PRC. "The new program is a direct response to users' requests for such a resource."
 Registered products differ from branded products in that rather than being tested, registered products are backed by a supplier's statement of conformance and a legal agreement between X/Open and the supplier.
 An X/Open Registered Applications Directory will be available in mid-April. It has been designed so that products are referenced by software product type, supplier and branded platform. If a user has settled on a particular branded platform, he will be easily able to locate compatible products. Conversely, it will be easy to identify the number of platforms that support a particular software product.
 The directory will be available in several ways: via an on-line Bulletin Board Service, in hard copy from X/Open and in the UniForum UNIX Products Directory (January 1993).
 "The strength of the X/Open trademark on a software product, which will identify it as a registered application for the XPG platform, will be extremely valuable in our marketing efforts, particularly with large customers committed to open systems," said Dick Curtis, vice president of quality and standards at Informix. "Providing a directory that is accessible in a variety of ways will also aid in the overall implementation of open systems."
 Founded in 1984, X/Open is a worldwide independent open systems organization dedicated to developing an open, multivendor Common Applications Environment (CAE) based on de facto and international standards. Specification of the CAE is achieved through close cooperation between users, vendors and standards organizations worldwide.
