Wrong to blame pit closures on Mrs T; VOICE OF THE NORTH.

F EARL of Whickham (Voice of the North, February 4) is wrong, and to refer to a lady who is now a peeress of the realm simply as "Thatcher" is gross bad manners.

It was not the then Mrs Thatcher who was responsible for pit closures, but the result of the industry's own militancy, aided and abetted by smoke-filled meetings at No 10 Downing Street during the tenancy of James Callaghan. Does anyone remember that famous remark: "Crisis, what crisis?" I have no quarrel with those who do not share my opinions provided they do not set out deliberately to distort and mislead. Hatred is an emotive word.
