Would PCCs stop police cover-ups? Views of the North.

IF ever there was an example of why we need democratically elected Police and Crime Commissioners it was Hillsborough.

Yet again we have seen a high profile case where senior police officers have been proved to have lied, prevaricated and conspired to hide the truth from the public. In this case it was even worse, the police tried to put the blame on the dead, innocent victims of a tragic calamity and their families have had to suffer ever since.

This is but one in a series of cases, De Menezes, Stephen Lawrence and others where the Association Of Chief Police Officers, ACPO have shown they cannot be trusted with governance of the police.

I pose the question, would there have been a cover-up if a PCC had been in place? PHIL BUTLER, Conservative Candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner Northumbria Police, Heddon on the Wall, Northumberland
