Worth the sacrifice.

I read the July Culture in Context ("How much are we fighting for?"). Obviously Patrick McCormick never served in the military. In addition, he displayed a cowardly attitude that is shared by so many Americans today.

We all must recognize that Americans enjoy their freedom today strictly because of the military--nothing else. The United States will remain the land of the free only as long as it remains the home of the brave.

McCormick proposes that we not insult these terrorists because that might cause them to do worse things. You cannot appease any criminal. These bad people will recognize any sign of cowardice or lack of resolve, and that energizes their determination to destroy us.

McCormick is saying, don't join the military and bring our troops home now from Iraq and all the other hot spots. More people are killed every day on the streets of America--by accidents and murder than are killed in Bagdad. Why doesn't he tackle that problem?

Nothing is ever accomplished without sacrifice. Our military is fighting for the survival of our traditional way of life, not only in this country but in the whole world.

Col. Timothy F. Horan

San Antonio, Texas

Your article and scurrilous cartoon impugning the integrity of our armed services left me reeling in disbelief. For many of our average patriotic citizens, the armed forces have proved an able and idealistic path to a good, worthwhile, and successful life.

That in a time of war--and the war against terrorism and Islamic extremism is indeed a most fearsome war--that you, a Catholic publication, would be so evil as to savagely defame our military is nothing less than sinful.
