World Psoriasis Day being observed today.
ISLAMABAD:World Psoriasis Day being observed Monday among 50 countries worldwide with the theme "Treat Psoriasis Seriously" dedicated to the people living with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis.
Psoriasis is a severe, chronic auto immune skin condition that causes itchy or dry patches of thick, red, flaky skin with silvery scales.
According to the International Federation of Psoriasis Association (IFPA), which sponsors the events, psoriasis affects more than 125 million people around the world.
Anyone can get psoriasis, but certain factors can increase your risk of developing the disease, including family history, stress, excess weight or obesity, smoking, viral and bacterial infections". Dr Arsalan a senior Dermatologist of a private hospital said.
He said, for many psoriasis is still a relatively unknown disease. Hence, this condition not only affects the sufferers physically, but also socially, emotionally and financially, mainly due to lack of awareness about the condition among the public.
He added that unfortunately, psoriasis can't be cured, but there are a range of treatments that can improve symptoms and the appearance of skin patches.
He advised the patients to adopt healthier lifestyle choices, such as moisturizing, quitting smoking and managing stress.
The idea of having an annual psoriasis day has been around for a long time. In 2004, several psoriasis patient associations got together, created a Steering Committee and made World Psoriasis Day a reality. Their dedication and enthusiasm ensured that the first World Psoriasis Day was a resounding success.
