World Day to Combat Desertification.

ISLAMABAD, June 17 -- World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) will be commemorated today (June 17) in remembrance of adoption of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

This year theme of WDCD is 'Enhancing Soils Anywhere Enhances Life Everywhere'.

The Day is commemorated to create awareness among people about land degradation and desertification, which affect millions of people around the world including arid and semi arid regions of Pakistan.

Desertification, land degradation and drought have emerged as major environmental challenges especially in the developing countries like Pakistan.

Climate change is likely to aggravate problems of land degradation and desertification and increase vulnerabilities of dry land communities.
